What You Really Need to Fight Cancer

breast-cancer

Three months into hibernation deserves an explanation.

First there was the crazy office work load, the Yolanda relief drives, then the holidays. What really temporarily stopped me from blogging though is the giant breast lump that tormented me of possibly having cancer.

It’s crazy, right?

I initially wrote this post five days after my surgery. If you were able to read it, it was a happy post. What I didn’t expect was the post-surgery visit to my doctor on the sixth day with a new update and new biopsy result. Well, I’m still in denial and all I can really say right now is that I feel like Angelina Jolie once more.

Angelina-Jolie-2

I have edited and shortened this post to focus on encouraging you ladies, who chanced upon and reading my humble blog right now, to always self-examine your breasts and immediately see a doctor for any irregularity.

Another way to make sure our boobies are okay is to get a breast ultrasound every six months. This painless 5-minute procedure costs P1,500 at Chong Hua Hospital.

If you’re 40 years old or above, you have to get a mammogram, which costs P2,000 at the same hospital. Heard it’s a bit painful but definitely won’t kill you.

I’ll leave the next step to your doctor but in my case which saw a big breast mass, I underwent a core needle biopsy, which costs P15,000. Then, a breast lump surgery for around P50,000. All charged to my company health insurance.

Money usually becomes an issue why some women don’t get themselves checked. I will again update this post should I come up with any organization that offers free breast exams like what I have mentioned above. If you know any, please feel free to let us know through the comments section.

Apart from the breast examinations mentioned above, I personally believe that what you really need to fight cancer is a big deal of courage and faith, lots of it.

I was afraid once and when I finally got the courage to undergo all these procedures, it still left me afraid. As you know, courage is not the absence of fear but the strength to face the unknown. Something that faith alone can give us.

And I remain faithful.

Jollibee’s 35th Birthday in Cebu

jollibee

Jollibee turned 35 last September 28.

Age is only in the mind for this big jolly red fella so he threw kiddie parties in 35 select branches all over the Philippines including the Jollibee Cebu-Parkmall branch here in just one day.

Lance and I were lucky to be invited to the must-go children’s party of the year.

What I Learned from Metro Ayala’s Baby Expo 2013: Lessons from Supermoms

It’s time to clear cobwebs now.

I’ll just start from where I left off—the Baby Expo in Cebu.

Unfortunately, I failed to attend any of the interesting child’s health and parenting talks during the event.

Well, the Friday talks were set on office working hours then Lance’s only first cousin Sean came in Saturday for the much-awaited visit and bonding time until Sunday.

Good thing I was still able to squeeze in some time to cover assignments for Cebu Daily News, interview supermoms Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan and Dawn Zulueta-Lagdameo, and learned some lessons on motherhood.

The three-day event will give helpful and interesting talks about babies and motherhood from health and parenthood experts.

In fact, celebrity super mom Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan will grace the event today to share parenting tips together with the Philippine Pediatric Society.

She will also be launching her latest children’s book entitled “Kuya Na Si Bunso”.

The Bright Side of Failure

Success-Failure-Sign

Eighteen is the number I finished my 30-Day Blog Challenge.

Sadly, I never completed any time-framed challenges. I failed here, in my previous blog and twitter account. Perhaps, I should stop imposing these kind of challenges on myself.

The reason why I kept on doing it is to cultivate a blogging habit so I can nurture and sustain this blog.

On a positive note, I am doing well. Going more than half-way is the farthest I have gone so far.

Besides, I have also encountered lots of wonderful opportunities along the way.

Payday Routine

Lance and the Giant Abacus

Every payday is a Math day.

I do addition, subtraction, and division. Yes, strictly in that order. I wish I can do multiplication after addition.

A single mom needs to be wise with money. Gone are the days when we can go wild as soon as we receive our paychecks and act like one-day millionaires.

So allow me to explain my personal Math process.

Sunday’s Best: Guess for Lance

Sunny Orange

It’s one of those days when Lance loves orange.

He ditches his Lightning McQueen-inspired red shirts and chooses to look more sunny.

Sorry if Lance opted for a serious look in his pose. Maybe, he thinks it would be redundant to smile. 😀

Night Out in Dreamland

Don’t let the photo deceive you. I’m at work. Yes, this is the kind of work I do sometimes. Right now I’m writing with the blaring sound of electronic dance music in the background so I’ll just make this post short.

International DJ Paul Van Dyk is playing tonight and I can’t wait to meet him in person later. More about him in my next post.

Have to party now. 😉

Cravings

I can’t think of anything worthwhile to post tonight but you. Your soft cheese-moistened bread, chewy cheese, and cheesy smell goodness. Arghh! I want some cheese tonight. Too bad, I’m on a diet.

Freddie Aguilar

If you have noticed, most sections of SingleMomInCebu are still under construction including the FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions).

What I actually plan to do is post real questions from readers of this blog. Since it has just been launched and I am not actively networking, it might take some time to actually fill that section for my baby blog.

However, there’s actually one nagging question that has been so frequently asked to me that I can right away post in the FAQ section.

It’s about this guy:

Cool Off

What’s the best way to let your steam off?

Eat ice cream.

Lance had his late night craving so we headed to nearby 7 Eleven for some sweet cold generous serving of ice cream.

It’s one of the bestsellers in the 24-hour convenience store sold at P15 per huge cone.

My boy loved it!

I did, too. You know when you had a bad day, you just want to get it all off your system. The ice cream did it. Actually, coming home to your son is the quickest relief but sometimes the nagging pissed feeling inside you remains.

Lance asked for a second cone but too much sweet is bad before bedtime so I gently prodded him for us to already go home. Well, my little boy was obviously in a happy mood so he obediently agreed.

We walked home with my son’s hands holding me tightly. The slow strides of his little legs allowed me to think, breathe, and silently enjoy the moment with him. He looked up to me smiling with his wide delightful eyes pointing at the stray dog on the street. He then started talking non-stop about I assume that dog. I really didn’t try to comprehend, all that mattered was his loud happy voice.

The bad day has ended.

Sunday’s Best

Kids FashionSunday Outfit

Are you familiar with #OOTD posts on Instagram?

Well, today is a kind of like that post. Since I am not really into fashion (so is Lance for sure), I will try to just do it every Sunday. So I will call this type of post as Sunday’s Best, which may not necessarily be outfits of Lance going to church. It can be any regular outfit that my little boy fancies to wear.

In case you don’t know, it’s really difficult to dress a toddler. Especially Lance who at two is already very picky with the clothes he wears. Like he would only wear his Lightning McQueen rubber shoes (as shown in the photos), prefers to wear pants or jeans only (I’m not sure what kind of made up story his granny told that made him wear denim shorts today), and t-shirts that again he alone has a hand to choose.

Home Buddy

20130706-235827.jpgMovie Night at Home.

Movie date did not push through. I was down with menstrual migraine so baby love and I just stayed at home the whole Saturday. Though I did ask him if he wants to go to the movies. His quick reply was “no” maybe because he has no idea what the movies are. My little home buddy was just happy being home with me. He snuggled up to me in bed while a headache nursed me and told me lots of stories which I assume are about the monster that his granny is telling him about everyday so he would nap in the afternoon and the yellow toy car that went missing. He didn’t talk about his minions anymore. Saw him throw them inside his plastic basket. Poor minions, the love must have waned and he’s back to his first love–cars.

Around 9 p.m. I asked him if he wants to ride a jeep with me because thought of going for some late night snacks with the beau. He got excited and immediately said, “Sakay jeep. Mommy wear shirt.” The beau sent a text saying that it’s raining. When I said, “Sorry Lance but it’s still raining,” the little boy answered back, “Finish rain.” I didn’t know that it rained earlier that evening. Oh boy, Lance now knows how to reason. Anyway, I had to make up stories so he won’t force me to get dressed and go out.

Movie Date Plan

Despicable Me 2You must have already figured it out.

I have been Minionized so tomorrow Lance and I will hit the movie house to watch these cute yellow guys.

Hopefully, Lance would just sit still and enjoy the movie.

I am not sure if it’s wise to bring a two-year-old to cinemas so I’ll just go and figure that out tomorrow.

This movie date is something I have been looking forward with my little boy. It has been a long week and we had little playtime together. If ever, it would also be his first movie watching experience via the big screen.

Wish us good luck! 😉

I am not sure in other parts of the Philippines but here in Cebu we are dominated by these Minions.

Papa’s Girl

Same day today, years ago, marked Papa’s birthday.

Today is one of those days that I get nostalgic about my father.

Papa was my first teacher, first movie date, and first travel buddy.

He passed away when I was eight, just two years after I last saw him.
